During the Great Depression, sales in nearly every category plummeted. However, during that time, the sales of lipsticks actually soared. The phenomenon has been called the “Lipstick Effect” and was basically the result of a poorer female customer seeking an affordable splurge.

During our most recent downturn, we have most certainly seen a “Lacquer Effect“.  The last few years have seen the rise of all things nail, and the truth is that in the early days of the craze, mass-market manufacturers pretty much missed the boat.  But this being the land of opportunity, many independent brands popped up to fill the void, including my picks for the perfect Fall manicure, Literary Lacquers.

So I recently went for a manicure, toting along my Pure Color Nail Lacquer in the shade Chrome Violet, from the Estee Lauder Metallics Nail Lacquer collection for Fall 2013.  Almost immediately after a first coat was applied to my toes, a woman sitting two chairs away from me demanded that the same polish be used for her pedicure. When I explained the bottle was actually mine and didn’t belong to the salon, she practically sneered! She asked her technician to find an identical color on their shelves. The technician had a look on her face like “that’s impossible” but searched around anyway.

In the meanwhile, the man sitting next to me (yes you read that right) also couldn’t stop talking about the shade. He compared it to the finish you would find on a car, due to its molten-metal appearance. I joked with him and asked if he’d like to try it too.

Lady #1 followed up with me when her pedicure was complete. “See?” she said, “I found a good match.” And she showed me her purple toes that had an opalescent finish that looked NOTHING like Estee Lauder’s Chrome Violet.

My point in telling you all of this? The chrome finish Pure Color nail lacquers from Estee Lauder’s Metallics collection are certainly conversation starters!
