During the Great Depression, sales in nearly every category plummeted. However, during that time, the sales of lipsticks actually soared. The phenomenon has been called the “Lipstick Effect” and was basically the result of a poorer female customer seeking an affordable splurge.
During our most recent downturn, we have most certainly seen a “Lacquer Effect“. The last few years have seen the rise of all things nail, and the truth is that in the early days of the craze, mass-market manufacturers pretty much missed the boat. But this being the land of opportunity, many independent brands popped up to fill the void, including my picks for the perfect Fall manicure, Literary Lacquers.
