Home Exfoliation Tips 2011: Skyy Hadley Weighs In!

I couldn’t be more thrilled to be waving to Winter’s crazy weather while looking through my rear-view mirror. But Winter isn’t truly over until the side-effects of the season are gone. Eliminating all of the dry, damaged skin left behind is turning out to be quite a daunting task! Here are some budget-friendly home exfoliation tips for 2011 from Skyy Hadley, owner of the As “U” Wish Nail Spa in Hoboken, NJ. These at-home cures for dry peeling skin can be whipped up right in your kitchen!

FACE:

Give yourself an at home microdermabrasion treatment before bed by mixing half a cup of sugar with water until a paste forms and rub it onto your face in small circles. Rinse and apply your favorite night cream. You’ll wake up in the morning with younger looking, glowing skin!

BODY:

Use an exfoliating sugar scrub in the shower once a week to remove dead skin from your entire body. You can make this in your kitchen by mixing about a cup of brown sugar with a ½ cup of extra virgin olive oil. Rub all over your body and rinse. When you step out of the shower, remember to treat yourself to a Shea Butter application. Shea Butter is soothing and moisturizing and helps cell regeneration, which aids in healing dry skin.

FEET:

Winter can cause dry calluses on your heels. Try my Meals for the Heels Mask once every two weeks for sandal ready feet! Mix one cup of plain oatmeal and a 1/2 cup of whole milk in a pot and heat over the stove, stirring until cooked. Add a bit of sugar to thicken the mixture and then let it cool off. When the mixture thickens, apply a generous layer to your heels, cover with clear plastic wrap and leave on for 5 – 10 minutes. The oatmeal soothes dry, itchy or irritated skin while the milk acts as an exfoliant to help get rid of dry and dead skin cells. Finish off by moisturizing some pure shea butter into your heals. If you do this at night you can slip on warm socks to lock in the moisture for ultra smooth feet in the morning!

Regular readers of the Raging Rouge beauty blog are familiar with my hair cleansing woes. My scalp is so sensitive, some shampoos and conditioners actually eat through my skin. No exaggeration, my allergic reaction is as if someone dripped sulfuric acid on my scalp!

I tested the formula for normal hair. The result was much what I would expect of a clarifying shampoo and conditioning treatment. My hair felt squeaky clean! Clean + Simple removed my styling products effectively and left it looking super-shiny. I look forward to buying the dry/color treated option the next time I hit a drugstore, and will report back to you when I try it out!

Today Nick Arrojo, of Arrojo Studio and author of Great Hair: Secrets to Looking Fabulous and Feeling Beautiful Every Day helps to set the record straight when it comes to three common hair myths.

There’s a new trend that says you should get your hair cut every four weeks, instead of the traditional six to eight weeks. I don’t believe this for one second and neither should you. Unless your hair is super short, and you like to keep it that way, getting your hair cut within four weeks is a waste of money. A good haircut should last a minimum of six weeks before needing another trim.

The fuller-figured woman often brings her hair forward over her face, mistakenly believing this will hide her fuller shape. It doesn’t. Bringing hair forward to the cheeks actually draws attention to the fullest part of anybody’s face: chubby cheeks! Instead of trying to disguise your shape and size, be brave, style your hair back away from your face, expose your eyes, and get the twinkle back.

Calling out fashion faux pas is all the rage. Never wear white before Memorial Day or after Labor Day is a common one that makes me giggle. It’s just not true. If you look great who cares what date it is?! It’s the same with hair: Don’t wear long hair over forty, people say. I disagree. As long as your hair is healthy, the style is modern, and it suits you, then wear any length you want, regardless of your age.

Feeling the need to embrace an edgier color for Spring? Biker Blue–from MAC’s Jeanius collection–was actually quite a surprise. In the bottle, it appears to be a deep midnight blue with shimmer. Once applied, the color was actually a softer cornflower blue with shimmer. Much less edgy than I imagined, and positively enchanting!
